MLBPA Certification Requirements: Complete Checklist
What the MLBPA requires to become a certified player agent: application, background check, written exam, fees, and General vs Limited certification.
MLBPA certification is its own process. Do not copy an NFLPA checklist and swap the letters. Confirm the current cycle on the MLBPA's own materials; the rules below are the ones candidates actually get stuck on.
The checklist
- Application to the MLBPA in the window they announce for that year
- Background review as published for the cycle
- Pass the written exam — the union has not published a numeric pass mark
- Pay the application and certification amounts the MLBPA bills
- Stay current on dues, disclosures, and any continuing requirement they set
What the exam expects you to know
- The 2022–2026 Basic Agreement
- The 2021 Major League Rules
- The 2022 Joint Drug Prevention and Treatment Program
- MLBPA Regulations Governing Player Agents, as amended December 17, 2025
- Service time, free agency, salary arbitration, the Competitive Balance Tax, the Uniform Player's Contract, options, Rule 5, and drug-program discipline
- Certification types: General, Limited, Minor League, and Expert Agent Advisor
What will not carry over from NFLPA or NBPA
- The pass rule: NFLPA is scaled, NBPA is a raw 80%, MLBPA has no published numeric cut
- Cap math: dead-money proration and apron restrictions are not CBT math
